Slash Dotted Yet Again

The leaked pages from the forthcoming Herald potboiler have yielded yet another Slash Dotting and discussion of the leading journalists of the metaverse: me and Walker. Some comments are not so kind: "typical ignorant stuckup journalist". Another suggests I should log into Second Life where I would learn that everyone is 25 or older. Riiiiiight. Oh well, just so they pronounce 'Urizenus' correctly.

That post is missleading if you're viewing /. with the default settings, where any reply rated 0 or less (troll and flamebait) is hidden. The post you mention was a reply to someone else saying that SL was full of 12-year-olds playing dollhouse or something.

The only people that will buy the book sadly are those maybe who play the game or other games related to the book. No one outside of those communities will give a rats ass. Sad, but true. With that said let's look at the numbers.

Second Life has a population of roughly 40,000 people (thats including people's multiple accounts so lets say 30,000 for fun). TSO, whos numbers are still dwindling, have had at their peak a user base of roughly 80,000 (which I find hard to beleive and I always beleived EA inflated their userbase numbers anyway, gotta love Mr Brown!). That number is much much lower now. No one from SWG or WoW will care as this site does not discuss those games and hense the book barely will if at all. Those contain the biggest userbases for MMORPG's.

Gamers are just that... Gamers. They don't care to read a lengthy book on a rather boring topic. Uri, I have been documenting for a very long time proof you make up a lot of what you report. How do I know this? Becuase I myself created several FALSE stories which you gladly published (I did so just for this purpose, well that and I used the power of the Herald for evil as I extorted other players with threats of stories I know will get published regardless of fact or fiction). So is this book of yours going to be fiction or non-fiction?

Don't get me wrong, I do hope the book does well, but after publishing costs, splitting the profits, etc.. Your not going to see much. Oh, let's not forget the possible lawsuits that may come from both players and game makers as a result of the book being published. This is where the games cross into real life. =)

Hi, I'm not Marsellus, even though I too, faked a hoax story and got Uri to publish it. But I actually think his book will do pretty well. I think there's a huge population of gamers out there, not just the ones in TSO or SL who know the Herald personally, but all kinds of gamers who will read this. It will be a niche hit. I suspect it will sell better than Cory Doctorow's books, which are kinda geeky and lit-crit kinda stuff, and while they won't be fronted at Barnes and Nobles will be one of those Internet best-sellers. You have to give Uri credit where it is due, he knows how to tell a story. Mark, too. That's what it is all about, being able to tell the story effectively.

I'd buy his book. EA has enough dirt to fill at least several chapters. And then we get to the wide wacky world of SL. So it's sure to be alot of reading in this book. :)

Of course anyone who knows Uri on a personal or gaming level will buy the book RB. That's almost a give in. Beyond that is the audience Uri wants to reach.
